Sermon: Hidden in Plain Sight
The Sunday's we will walk with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Have you ever experienced a time when something you lost and had been searching for was hiding in plain sight - right in front of your nose?
Jesus wanted to conduct a profound, seven-mile Bible study to prove that the Messiah’s suffering and resurrection were already prophesied. By remaining "hidden", He ensured the disciples focused strictly on the written Word of God rather than getting distracted by the shock and emotion of seeing Him alive. He taught them how to find Him in the Old Testament, starting with Moses and the Prophets, causing their "hearts to burn" from the truth of the scriptures alone.
Before His death, the disciples related to Jesus strictly through His physical presence. Post-resurrection, Jesus was preparing them for a time when He would ascend to heaven and no longer be physically visible. By hiding His face and then vanishing the exact moment they recognized Him, He taught them to experience His real presence through the Word and the breaking of bread. As His disciples, we too find that God brings seasons of hiddenness into our lives, and although He is still very much with us, we don't feel His Presence in the same way. Hiddenness is about possessing the things of God through His Word by faith.
