Scripture Texts: Luke 24:13-35
Sermon: Hidden in Plain Sight
The Sunday's we will walk with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Have you ever experienced a time when something you lost and had been searching for was hiding in plain sight - right in front of your nose?
Jesus wanted to conduct a profound, seven-mile Bible study to prove that the Messiah’s suffering and resurrection were already prophesied. By remaining "hidden", He ensured the disciples focused strictly on the written Word of God rather than getting distracted by the shock and emotion of seeing Him alive. He taught them how to find Him in the Old Testament, starting with Moses and the Prophets, causing their "hearts to burn" from the truth of the scriptures alone.
Before His death, the disciples related to Jesus strictly through His physical presence. Post-resurrection, Jesus was preparing them for a time when He would ascend to heaven and no longer be physically visible. By hiding His face and then vanishing the exact moment they recognized Him, He taught them to experience His real presence through the Word and the breaking of bread. As His disciples, we too find that God brings seasons of hiddenness into our lives, and although He is still very much with us, we don't feel His Presence in the same way. Hiddenness is about possessing the things of God through His Word by faith.

Discussion Questions
Icebreaker Questions
- When have you felt disappointed or confused by life circumstances, feeling as though God was absent?
- Have you ever experienced an event where you felt the Holy Spirit was present?
- Have you ever looked back at a difficult time and later realized Jesus was walking right beside you?
- What makes your heart "burn within you" when reflecting on Scripture or God's work in your life?
- How can you be better at recognizing Jesus in unexpected places or ordinary moments (like breaking bread with others)?
Application:
One Hope is the name of a beautiful three-masted sailing yacht moored at the Jerisich dock in downtown Gig Harbor. It has been at the dock for over a year in preparation for launching. The Captain has just posted a “Crew Wanted” ad in the local paper and on the internet. He is inviting all able-bodied sailors to join him on a blue-water cruise to the islands of Polynesia. The stated purpose of the voyage is to share the Good News with as many people as possible with stops at Hawaii, the South Pacific Islands, and Fiji. The 5,000 mile journey will take about a year and will teach advanced navigation, dead reckoning, sail handling, weather forecasting, and most importantly how to function within a crew of over fifty other sailors when storms appear. A negative condition is that each prospective member of the crew must pay their own way, but in return will learn valuable life lessons which will serve them well for the rest of their life.
If there was absolutely nothing holding you back, would you join the crew? Why / Why not?
